Statement on Detention of Cihan Erdal
The Canadian Anthropology Society/Société canadienne d’anthropologie is very concerned about the detention of Cihan Erdal, a doctoral candidate at Carleton University, while doing research in Turkey. As the association that represents anthropologists from across Canada, many of whom do their research abroad; we are deeply concerned about the well-being of Mr. Erdal. His research was vetted by both his committee and his peers through Carleton’s human research board and it is clear that his business in Turkey was not political, but rather a combination of research and personal matters. We hope that the Government of Canada, like us, condemn his detention. In particular, we urgently request that the Canadian Embassy in Turkey deploy all their resources, including consular services, to secure his release.
