The Energy Stories Lab at the University of Calgary (Co-Directors: Dr. Rebecca Dolgoy, Dr.
Jean-René Leblanc and Dr. Sabrina Perić) and Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and
Innovation, invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher for one year to work on projects
related to documenting energy transition and community change in the Regional Municipality of
Wood Buffalo (Northern Alberta).
Job Description:
The postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with the Department of Anthropology and
Archaeology, and will collaborate with the Energy Stories Lab (https://www.energystorieslab.ca/)
and the Ingenium Research Institute (https://ingeniumcanada.org/centre/the-ingenium-research-
institute) to develop new lines of research related to current projects on energy transition,
community experiences, and understandings of the past and present in northern Alberta,
specifically through the “Stories and Lives of Abasand” project: (click here for more info).
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work with northern Alberta communities on oral
history work related to Abasand, community engagement, archival research and/or digital
storytelling (including audio and video creation). Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to
participate in the work of collection development with Ingenium, and should possess a keen
interest in contemporary ethical museological practices. The post-doctoral researcher will be
based primarily out of Calgary and northern Alberta, with occasional trips to Ottawa, Ontario.
The post-doctoral researcher, once selected, will have the opportunity to apply competitively for
the University of Calgary Eyes High Post-Doctoral Matching Fund Program, which will secure
an additional $25,000 for this position.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a PhD, or expect to receive a PhD before the start of the appointment, in
Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, Indigenous Studies, Heritage Studies, or related
disciplines. Applicants must have experience with community-based research.
In addition to above requirements, candidates should have:
previous experience doing one or more of the following: museum/curatorial work,
different forms of community engagement, digital storytelling, visual
anthropology/filmmaking, and digital heritage;
Strong written communication skills, preferably demonstrated in writing of peer-review
publications and/or creative works and/or exhibition catalogues;
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group
involving students and faculty from a range of backgrounds, as well as community
collaborators and partners;
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal and external
stakeholders;
Efficient organizational and time management skills in setting priorities and
accomplishing tasks within deadlines.
