Statement by the CASCA Executive Committee on the Need for an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

· Statements

CASCA is horrified and deeply concerned by the tragedy unfolding in Palestine-Israel. We support international calls for an immediate ceasefire.

We condemn Hamas’s attacks on innocent people and the taking of hostages. We also condemn the violence inflicted on the entire population of Gaza as part of the Israeli government’s military campaign, which has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries and led to the dispossession and displacement of one million people.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has now reached catastrophic proportions, demands immediate action. Governments around the world must make every possible diplomatic effort to end the widespread violence and ensure that all those who have been abducted and held hostage are reunited with their families. They must demand the immediate lifting of the siege and support all international organizations involved in Gaza’s reconstruction efforts. In doing so, they must promote and enforce international laws that grant humanitarian protections to all persons living under military occupation, while
encouraging efforts to ensure the inherent rights of Palestinians to self-determination.

Furthermore, CASCA calls on Canadian universities to support the academic freedom of all faculty members, students, and staff who wish to speak out on these issues, and to protect them from any form of malicious disclosure of personal information and hate speech.
