Racism and violence against Asians

· Statements

The Canadian Anthropological Society (CASCA) condemns anti-Asian hatred in Canada and recognizes that it is intertwined with a context of white supremacy, xenophobia and, often, misogyny.

We would like to especially offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of the eight victims, six of whom were women of Asian origin, who lost their lives in a white supremacist terrorist act that occurred in the United States. CASCA recognizes that hatred, racism and discrimination against Asian people have existed for a long time in Canada and have had their share of victims; examples include the internment of Canadians of Japanese origin and targeted immigration policies such as the head tax imposed on Chinese immigrants to Canada and the Continuous Journey Regulation that led to the expulsion of the passengers of the Komagata Maru. These policies legitimize the racist ideologies of today and tomorrow, because of which Canadians of Asian origin and new arrivals are targeted and scapegoated in times of crisis.

We further recognize that all forms of racism are gendered and that anti-Asian racism carries an openly misogynistic discourse that contributes to the objectification of Asian women, thereby supporting their sexual and labor exploitation. In the past year, community groups, Statistics Canada and police forces have reported a massive increase in acts of discrimination and violence against Asian people in Canada.

As anthropologists, it is our duty to name and denounce systemic racism, racial violence and hate. Through our teaching and research, we commit to working daily to promote inclusion, respect and solidarity within our membership community, but also among the general public.
