Statement on the detention of Cihan Erdal
· Statements
The Canadian Anthropological Society is deeply concerned about the detention of Mr. Cihran Erdal, a PhD candidate at Carleton University who is being held in Turkey while conducting his research there. As an association representing anthropologists across Canada, many of whom carry out research abroad, we are very concerned about Mr. Erdal’s well‑being. His research was approved both by his committee and by his peers through Carleton University’s Research Ethics Board for research involving humans, and it is clear that he is not in Turkey for political reasons but rather to conduct his research and for personal reasons. We hope that the Government of Canada will condemn his detention as we do. Specifically, we call on the Canadian Embassy in Turkey to urgently mobilize all available resources, including consular services, to secure Mr. Erdal’s release.
