Two members of CASCA's Executive Committee will finish their terms at the annual general meeting (AGM) in May:Emma Varleywill leave her position as outgoing president, andRine Viethwill complete his/her term as the anglophone active member. We thank both of them for their passion and commitment to CASCA.
Monica Hellerwill become the outgoing president, andBernie Perleywill begin his term as president.
Liesl Gamboldwill join the team as president-elect andEve Haque, as the anglophone active member. We are delighted to welcome such wonderful colleagues and look forward to working with them. A few brief introductions:
Liesl Gamboldis an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University, where she is also coordinator of the Women's Studies program and an associate at the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on the European Union. Liesl's doctoral and postdoctoral research was conducted on a former agricultural production cooperative in Russia, where she examined the economic and social effects of agricultural privatization in the post-Soviet era. Although she continues to be interested in economic anthropology, she now conducts research on aging, international migration of retirees, and housing decisions made by older adults. Having conducted research in Mexico, France, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Finland, she continues to explore the changing contexts of aging and well-being. She is strongly interested in qualitative research methods and has contributed her expertise to several interdisciplinary projects.
Eve Haqueis a professor at the York Research Chair in Linguistic Diversity and Community Vitality at York University (Canada). She is also co-editor of TOPIA: A Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies. Her research and teaching interests include multiculturalism, white colonialism and language policy, with a focus on the regulation and representation of racialized migrant and immigrant people in settler-colonial societies. She has published numerous articles on these topics in journals such as Social Identities, Journal of Historical Sociology, Globalizations, Societies and Education, and Pedagogy and Culture and Society. She is also the author of the book Multiculturalism within a Bilingual Framework: Language, Race and Belonging in Canada, published by the University of Toronto Press.
