Statement on racialized violence in Canada and the United States

· Statements

The Canadian Anthropological Society (CASCA) condemns the recent murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis. CASCA recognizes the anguish and outrage felt by Black communities in Canada and the United States in the face of this recurring and historical violence perpetrated by individual and state actors who reproduce and benefit from current structural inequalities. We also recognize that the fight against this ongoing violence and systemic racism is borne disproportionately by Black, Indigenous, and racialized people. This cannot continue. We must act. As anthropologists, it is our duty to identify and denounce colonialism, systemic racism, and hatred. Through teaching and research, we are committed to working every day to promote inclusive, respectful, and supportive communities for our members and for society as a whole.
