Several new initiatives undertaken in the Bas-Saint-Laurent testify to forms of hope for a better environmental future through the implementation of original ways of relating to nature. This book offers a nuanced perspective on that. It focuses on local organizations that are investing differently in the enhancement of their surroundings through agriculture, the production and harvesting of non-timber forest products, maple syrup production, fishing, ecotourism, and citizen movements for the protection and conservation of nature. The ethnographic approach underpinning this exploration illuminates how these activities are anchored in the territory and in solidarity with the populations who inhabit it, notably through "ecological" practices and through diverse, engaged, and living relationships with their environment. Framed from a political ecology perspective, the contributions in this volume offer a different view of the life that pulses in the Bas-Saint-Laurent, beyond the statistical frameworks and government indicators to which we are often exposed regarding this region.
